Understanding Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and recorded with two numbers: systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.
Normal Blood Pressure
According to the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure for adults is less than 120/80 mm Hg. High blood pressure is defined as having a systolic pressure of 130 mm Hg or higher, or a diastolic pressure of 80 mm Hg or higher.
Blood Pressure Stages
High blood pressure is divided into stages. Elevated blood pressure is 120-129 mm Hg systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic. Stage 1 hypertension is 130-139 mm Hg systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic. Stage 2 hypertension is 140 mm Hg or higher systolic or 90 mm Hg or higher diastolic. A hypertensive crisis is 180/120 mm Hg or higher.
Blood Pressure Thresholds
Category | Systolic (mm Hg) | Diastolic (mm Hg) |
---|---|---|
Normal | Less than 120 | Less than 80 |
Elevated | 120-129 | Less than 80 |
Hypertension Stage 1 | 130-139 | 80-89 |
Hypertension Stage 2 | 140 or higher | 90 or higher |
Hypertensive Crisis | 180 or higher | 120 or higher |
Monitoring Your Blood Pressure
Regular monitoring of your blood pressure is crucial for maintaining health. It helps in early detection of hypertension and allows for timely intervention.
